Oxford Tutors - NYC

LA's Premiere Tutoring Collective

Oxford Tutors LA is a tutoring collective dedicated to helping students become confident, independent and successful as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Who We Are

Elisabeth, Founder & Director

A native Southerner, Elisabeth completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English Literature and Language at Oxford University in England.  As the only American undergraduate in her college, Elisabeth was struck by the revolutionary nature of the tutorial system, and the way in which methodical questioning might transform the "multiple choice" nature of American education.

For more than a dozen years, Elisabeth has been implementing the Oxford tutorial system with students facing challenges in all levels of education, from kindergarten to grad school.

Today, she focuses her attention on admissions strategy at the high school, college and grad school levels. Joined by her incredibly talented teaching team at Oxford Tutors, Elisabeth delights in helping students recognize that everything they need to know is already within them.

Brian

Brian received his B.A. in Mechanical Engineering from Harvard University, and specializes in tutoring all levels of math, chemistry, and physics, as well as SAT and ACT prep. He also tutors Latin (it's not a completely dead language!). In his free time, Brian enjoys writing comedy, playing tennis, and traveling.

Nick

Nick was educated at Eton and Oxford University in the UK. He was a leading tutor in London for almost ten years before moving to America five years ago. He teaches all the test preps  (ACT, SAT, ISEE, SSAT, GMAT etc), and can transform your child's relationship with math,  English, Latin,  French, and essay- writing. When not teaching, he writes and stars in sketch comedy.

Petey

Petey Menz graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in English and art history. He tutors history, English, biology, and SAT and ACT prep. When he's not tutoring, he's writing, watching '90s sitcoms, or reading Scandinavian crime fiction.

Alexis

Alexis Hauk spent the better part of the last decade writing and editing for a wide variety of publications, including The Atlantic, TIME, the National Journal, Washington City Paper, Cape Cod Times, Boston Phoenix, Mental Floss, DCist, Uproxx and more. A transplant to Los Angeles in 2015, she holds degrees from Emerson College (M.A., Publishing and Writing) and Emory University (B.A., English/Creative Writing and Italian Studies). Fun fact, she also has an e.e.cummings verse tattooed on her shoulder, and once wrote an article about where famous writers are buried. She enjoys helping students with writing, the humanities, and college admissions.

How We Work

Oxford Tutors LA is a tutoring collective dedicated to helping students from preschool through university recognize their unique intelligence and potential. We believe that with the right coaching, all students have within them the capacity to succeed academically and to thrive beyond the classroom.

At the core of our approach is the methodology that Oxford University made famous, the "Oxford tutorial system." This form of hands-on mentorship challenges students to be intellectually rigorous, resourceful, and independent, and to approach their studies with curiosity and confidence.
